Still from the Free Cooper Union livestream
When advising my graduating high school students in applying for art colleges, it’s always been a difficult conversation in breaking the news to them that they’ll potentially/likely be burying themselves in debt in exchange for the continuation of their creative educations.
For years, I’ve had no hesitation in advising my students who are enthusiastic about attending art colleges to apply to Cooper Union - my recommendation for that comes from the school’s outstanding reputation as a place for significant artistic development (even demonstrated in the thoughtful challenge of their application) as well as one of few remaining art schools that would provide accepted students with a financial situation that would not be scarily binding/troubling for their futures.
Unfortunately, this safe case seems to be ending with instated and planned raises in tuition costs. The Free Cooper Union group are working toward making this change more transparent and, hopefully, reverting its direction back to a free education.
